No. We literally went from judging all England fans wrongly to Scotland. <laugh>

Do Scotland fans even genuinely expect to qualify for major tournaments? It's been nigh on 20 years since their last and they've maybe had one okay qualifying campaign since but still fell short.

They never should be one of the favourites, but they also typically beat the nations in their groups they should, and then lose to a better country in the knockout round. This past Euros maybe being an exception. Obviously they draw a lot of attention due to the PL's popularity, but generally I've found England does as they realistically should in tournaments, neither overachieving or underachieving.
I'm a little bias because I'm Irish and hate the English, but from my POV what usually happens is England beat someone like Macedonia 4-0 and the press hype them up to no end, this continues right up to the mouth of a major tournament where they'll make you think England are up there with the likes of Germany, France, etc. Then England inevitably go in the Quarters (or earlier) and the press spends the rest of the summer lambasting the players and manager and calling for change, until September when England beat someone like Macedonia 4-0.
I think if you look at the media before Euro 2016 and the fans on social media everyone was saying how s*** we were <laugh> Obviously we outdid ourselves losing to Iceland. I honestly think the whole overhyped England thing is generally made up nowadays, people often just get a bit excited before tournaments which is fine imo but is often seen as fans overhyping things. It's all a matter of perspective as well, don't know why **** Scotland don't get more s*** for expecting to qualify for every major tournament. It's as ridiculous if not more than England expecting to win a major tournament.

<fist>

Also, it's not that we get excited by beating the smaller nations. I think it's more that we cruise through the qualifying groups without ever getting out of 2nd gear, possibly beating a couple of the stronger nations in friendlies along the way, only to get beat by weaker AND stronger nations as soon as the proper competitions arrive.

It's not that we think we should be beating Germany/Spain at all, but based on qualifying and players we have we should definitely do better than we do.
Well that's just a product of soft qualifying processes though. Maybe I have the benefit of avoiding being surrounded by British press, but I've never really known English fans who have genuinely believed they were going to win a tournament on the back of strong qualifying campaigns - though that could be because lately my biggest exposure to English fans are in this forum (and you're all a bunch of reasonable or cynical bastards <laugh> ).

Southgate needs to be braver in competitive games. Just been the same as under Hodgson so far.

I'm glad there is nationwide recognition that were are extremely s**** now though. Makes a change having no expectations, hopefully it'll allow the squad to be more relaxed in the next tournament since they'll have less pressure than ever on them.

They're missing Messi for the next 3 games. Their record without him is Played 8, Won 1, Drawn 4 and Lost 3. With him in the side they've won 5 out of 6 games. The rest of their stars need to step up otherwise they are well and truly out of it.
On that form that may not even finish in 5th which I think would then involve them in a play-off with a country from another Confederation.

Was it that promising though? It was played like a testimonial and we had 2 chances.

I saw a Shearer interview earlier about the captaincy, he's not got a clue. Mentioning Alli and Stones as candidates, like they need any added pressure.
Shearer infuriates me. He talked extensively after the Euros about England needing to adopt a progressive, forward thinking style after the Hodgson debacle, then championed Steve Bruce for the job, was delighted when Allardyce got it and constantly bangs on about needing to go back to the 'good old days' when he played for England. Make your mind up Alan.
