Santon says farewell to Newcastle

Post by Cal » Mon Feb 02, 2015 9:06 am

Looks like the move to Inter is all but official now.

Life is strange... I never expected to return... Thanks Newcastle and thanks to all the fans for these 3 and a half years together... we've spent many good times.... This city and this team will always remain in my heart.
I start a new adventure.... I'm happy to return to Inter... There I started my career and there I lived so many important moments.... I will give my best to repay the faith

What on earth are we playing at? Flogging two of our three best defenders, when we are really poor at the back. This club mystifies me.

In the summer he was in the press talking about possible moves to Italy - http://www1.skysports.com/football/news ... -newcastle" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Santon told Sky Sports Italy: "There has been interest from AC Milan and AS Roma for me, but I have two more years on my contract with Newcastle and I don't know if they want to sell me.

“I'm fine at Newcastle, I immediately felt at home there and I like the Premier League.

“I think I won't return to Italy this summer."
If he only has 1.5 years left on his contract, I guess negotiations for a new one didn't go well/happen, so we're cashing in before he depreciates?

Maybe the club feels they need a complete overhaul of the defence and are getting rid of who they can now.

I'd be ok with this if Williamson follows.

It seems to be an attempt at cutting the wage bill. Basically gambling that the cloggers we have will be enough to keep us up. Standard Ashley, 19th richest club in the world and we're cashing in on defenders when we desperately need them.

What is the point in this?! He is our best left back by miles, the other two numpties are nowhere near good enough at the moment (though granted Haidara was much improved at weekend.) This must be just a desperate attempt by Ashley to cut costs ahead of (hopefully) selling the club in the summer.

This club is pointless. We have 5 healthy defenders, three of whom are s****... but this can't stop us to cash out.

Any chance we have Mings lined up and have to get rid of one first so we don't end up with 4 players who can play LB?

So our full backs left if Santon does go:

RB: Janmaat

LB: Haidara & Dummett.

And if Coloccini or Williamson is injured, you can write off Dummett from the LB. We will have 5 senior defenders until May.

It's completely stupid, we left ourselves short of defenders when we decided to loan MYM out in the first place <laugh>
