Match day thread - NUFC v PNE
Preston North End (h)
Beaten here 6-0 in the League Cup back in October, Simon Grayson's Preston side return to Tyneside this evening for a Sky-transmitted 7.45pm start.
After Saturday's results United will be back in the Premier League if they can win this game.
Tickets are on public sale now and the Milburn Stand box office will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
The visitors took an allocation of 1,087 but had reportedly sold less than half of those by Thursday.
NUFC: Ciaran Clark is set to return after a six game absence after joining full training last week. Dwight Gayle won't feature.
PNEFC: Tom Clarke and Greg Cunningham remain sidelined while Alex Baptiste and Ben Pearson are suspended. Tyias Browning could return.
Recording away wins at QPR, Norwich, Rotherham, Bristol City and Burton by early January, the Lillywhites have managed five draws and two defeats away from Deepdale since then.
Referee: Andy Madley - fourth Toon appointment of the current season, following on from a 4-1 home victory over Reading and the 2-2 draw at Norwich City.
His other game came in the League Cup, the 6-0 win over Preston at Gallowgate that included a red card for Andy Browne.
It seems pertinent to mention that Andy Madley is a self-confessed Huddersfield Town supporter and his suitability for this game has been questioned.
That situation also arose in February when his brother Bobby - also a Terriers fan - took charge of Brighton versus Newcastle. That turned out alright.....

The weekends results took the pressure right off. I have no recollection of the 6-0 League Cup win
2-0 win.
2-0 win.

Re: Match day thread - NUFC v PNE
3-0 to us
thoughts on this quoteNever mind what has gone before and how some of these players have repeatedly let us down this season, they have this perfect chance to persuade the fans, rest of the squad, and especially Rafa Benitez, that they have the character and ability to play for Newcastle beyond May.
We have all seen Newcastle players in the past who looked hopeless cases, only to then find a starting point to resurrect and rebuild their careers at St James Park.
What I would say though, is if they can’t do it in this Monday night match then they are really a waste of space and need binned as soon as possible.
A packed home stadium, what is set to be a class atmosphere, up against a team in Preston who have nothing to play for, with the chance of sealing promotion in front of fifty two thousand of your own fans – all of this under the lights at St James Park.
If there are any Newcastle players who can’t respond to that then they are really at the wrong club.

Re: Match day thread - NUFC v PNE
I haven't been this anxious about a game in ages! It's like the last few games of last season! But at the opposite end of the table. I'd say these next few results are going to define our next few years even more so than the last few of last season.
We have a squad that is good enough, a manager than knows his stuff, the best fans in the league and it's at home against a team fresh off of three losses in a row. Surely it has to be now!
There I go again, getting all emotional...
