EA Kill Online Passes

Post by Cal » Thu May 16, 2013 12:16 am

Perhaps a sign that next-gen's DRM and potential used game curbing will please them? Or they've realised that project $10 is dickish and a game that has transferred hands doesn't cause any extra strain on their servers, as the original buyer is no longer using them.
Online Passes – the controversial attempt by many publishers to encourage new game sales by locking online-centric content for used copies – has become engrained in gaming culture over the last several years. But according to a report on VentureBeat, one major company is doing away with them.

Electronic Arts – the mega-publisher behind a litany of games including Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, Dead Space, Mass Effect and more – will be “discontinuing” its Online Pass initiative. In a statement provided to VentureBeat, EA’s John Reseburg said that “none of our new EA titles will include that feature.”

Reseburg admitted that Online Passes just don’t seem to be working. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

Many major publishers – including Sony and Ubisoft – continue to use Online Passes, though interestingly, Microsoft never seemed to go down that road. Will EA’s abolishment of this system coerce other publishers to follow suit?

<diva> But as Tomski says this probably just means they have something more insidious waiting for us.

Apparently this has been somewhat retroactive. http://www.dealspwn.com/ea-retroactivel ... ses-142306" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As reported on NeoGAF, the following online passes and DLC are now dropped to entirely free of charge (I've successfully tested Dragon Age II: The Black Emporium):

Alice: Madness Returns - American McGee's Alice (was 800msp)
Bad Company 2 VIP (was 800msp)
Bulletstorm Online Pass (was 800msp)
Dragon Age: Origins - The Stone Prisoner (was 1200msp)
Dragon Age 2: The Black Emporium (was 800msp)
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Online Pass (was 800msp)
Mass Effect 2: Cerberus Network (was 1200msp)
Medal of Honor Online Pass (was 800msp)
SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED™ ONLINE PASS (was 800msp)
Skate 3: Skate Share Pack (was 800msp)

More recent games, such as Army Of Two: The Devil's Cartel, still command an 800-1200 MSP price for their online passes, but this could well be a step in the right direction. Unless it's just a major SNAFU, that is. We'll update when we hear more.

Official confirmation.

https://help.ea.com/article/online-pass ... scontinued" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Online Pass has been discontinued, and its requirement for older games will be eliminated.

What was the EA Online Pass?
Online Pass was a unique, one-time-use code included with new EA games that allowed EA players to access online features. If the game was not purchased new, the online pass code might have been used already and the player would need to purchase a new Online Pass.

Do I still need an Online Pass to play multiplayer games online?
For new EA titles, Online Pass will no longer be needed or included. Additionally, we are in the process of eliminating Online Pass requirements from existing EA games. This process will take several weeks. For some games, the prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear; for others, you will still need to download and install an Online Pass, but they will be available free of charge from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace or PlayStation Store.

When will specific games have their Online Pass turned off?
The latest releases of EA SPORTS games are the first. Over the next several weeks, Online Pass will either be removed completely, or will be available for free in the PlayStation Store and Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Please note that our advisors will not be able to provide you an Online Pass code before that game's pass requirements are disabled. We appreciate your patience.

Why did we decide to do this?
We listened to the feedback from players, and decided to do away with Online Pass. We hope that eliminating Online Pass will allow more people to play and enjoy EA games for a long time to come.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/ea-on ... ying-dead/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"It's dead, it's dead, it's deep-sixed, it's at the bottom of the Mariana Trench," Electronic Arts' President of EA Labels Frank Gibeau stated plainly yesterday about the company's Online Pass program to Joystiq.

Following EA's announcement in late May that it was eliminating the Online Pass program, gamers braced for "the twist." That occurred last week when Microsoft finally announced the digital rights management (DRM) scheme for the Xbox One, which would have made an Online Pass program unnecessary. However, with Sony's announcement the PlayStation 4 will follow the current model of game console DRM and used games, it was a question if Online Pass was back on the table at EA.

"We're not crafting a strategy to bring [Online Pass] back, you will not input codes to unlock your game, it's not going to happen," said Gibeau. The executive then moved on to tell us the company's decision to kill Online Pass and Microsoft's Xbox One DRM plans weren't linked at all, therefore PlayStation 4's recent reveal wouldn't have changed their decision on the program anyway. He called the Online Pass program "flat out dumb."

"The amount of money that we made, it didn't replace the amount of frustration we put on our customers and it didn't offset the reputation damage it caused the company. So we said 'it's not worth it,' and so the idea was, look, 'don't do stuff like that anymore,'" said Gibeau, noting the company had the opportunity to wipe the slate clean under interim CEO Larry Probst.

The original theory behind Online Pass, also known as "Project Ten Dollar," was to charge used games buyers a fee for using the company's servers. Gibeau notes EA will make money in other ways through services.

"Do used game buyers of FIFA participate in Ultimate Team? Yeah. Is it possible they might buy DLC? Yeah. Frankly, we're being more nuanced and sophisticated about it. Before we used a blunt instrument. Now we're going to be like 'Look, they own it, they bought the disc and it's theirs. They have a legitimate right for not doing anything illegal.'" Gibeau continued, "If we want to be progressive about it, we will make online services available to them that if they want to buy they can, but they don't have to. At least that way we participate in some monetization. The reputational damage [Online Pass] was causing us was in excess of the dollars we were making."

Gibeau acknowledged the company's reputation isn't the best with gamers and that this tension creates inherent distrust, but he said there was no conspiracy with Microsoft and he had no idea what Sony would do. He concluded, "At the end of the day, we're not going to replace [Online Pass]. It's not coming back. It's dead."

---

Good to see that they've seemingly learned their lesson and are hopefully going back to good guy EA for a few years before the cycle repeats.
