Newcastle United 4 vs 1 Reading - 17/08/16
Re: Newcastle United 4 vs 1 Reading - 17/08/16
Just got back, some points from that match:
- Sels' distribution is spot on, huge difference from what we've been used to from Krul.
- Perez just didn't look interested for large parts of the game, off the ball especially.
- Ritchie and Hayden continue to be our best players, Dummett still one of the worst, and water is indeed wet.

still haven't seen Mbemba and Lascelles, surprising since they were so good together last season
(in my defence, i was at a festival at the time)

Think Hayden and Ritchie have been great, Gayle has been good but I'm not convinced by everyone else just yet. Defensively we still seem a bit hit and miss, definitely still a work in project. Need a winger, a creative midfielder to sit in alongside Hayden and a left back. But to win 4-1 is a great confidence booster after the start we've had, especially if we haven't played well, so hopefully we carry it into Saturday.

Huge game on Saturday. If we can ramp up the pressure and cut out the daft mistakes, we should get a good result .

I think we'll do well to get a point and I'd probably take it right now.biggeordiedave wrote:Huge game on Saturday. If we can ramp up the pressure and cut out the daft mistakes, we should get a good result .

This. Bristol City have been pretty good so far this season and are tough to beat at home. I'd snatch a hand off for a point right now.Heisen wrote:I think we'll do well to get a point and I'd probably take it right now.biggeordiedave wrote:Huge game on Saturday. No disrespect to the league, but I dont think there are any teams I'd snatch a hand off for a point.Donkey Toon wrote:This. Bristol City have been pretty good so far this season and are tough to beat at home. I'd snatch a hand off for a point right now.Heisen wrote:

1) Inspired by your first point I was curious to look up his pass % through 3 matches: 68%, which is up 17% from Elliot last season; although I know that's a small sample size, and lower opposition - but still, good sign.TBC wrote:Just got back, some points from that match:

2) As for Perez, I think he's always had a problem with that, his intensity wavering and his ability to consistently get on the ball and stay involved in matches. I was hoping lower opposition might open things up for him, but it seems the problem's persisted so far.
3) Sounds about right.

this. need to be going in to games wanting a win. they've only beat burton and wigan, and only played one game at home, bit early to be singing praises of their form.beardface wrote:No disrespect to the league, but I dont think there are any teams I'd snatch a hand off for a point.Donkey Toon wrote:

Whereas we have a record of poor away form going back years and have already lost to Fulham and Huddersfield. So one win and we can feel guaranteed to win away from home?Beatski wrote:this. need to be going in to games wanting a win. they've only beat burton and wigan, and only played one game at home, bit early to be singing praises of their form.beardface wrote:

I'd probably still hold out for the win rather then take a point before the match. Had we won against Huddersfield then I'd think differently.Heisen wrote:I think we'll do well to get a point and I'd probably take it right now.biggeordiedave wrote:Huge game on Saturday. Re: Newcastle United 4 vs 1 Reading - 17/08/16
Was at the match tonight and here are a few thoughts:
1) Thought Ritchie was outstanding yet again, he literally never stops running and looks to be our best player by far.
2) Hayden impressed a lot more than on Saturday. He seemed to have found a bit more confidence to make forward runs/passes and take a bit of a risk.
3) Agree with a previous post that Perez looked uninterested. He needs to drop into space and come looking to get on the ball a bit more.
4) Our defending was worrying at times. It looked like they could make a chance out of nothing and we looked a bit nervy and unsure at the back. Hopefully this was just down to pressure due to our bad start given the high expectations on the team.

If we do get Galloway in, I wouldn't be at all shocked to see Dummett given a chance at CB.

I can't believe some of the negativity that I've read, ok, I've not seen much in the last 2 weeks
(streams have been poor so far), let's give Rafa the time to sort us out. Today was a good win without playing well (so I've read), let's see what we are like in a couple of months.
