Trimming the squad to 25

Post by Speedo » Wed Sep 09, 2020 8:53 am

We have so many players <diva>

But who do you take in your 25 man squad?

Goalkeepers
<dubravka> <darlow> <gillespie>

Defenders
<clark> <dummett> <fernandez> <krafth> <lascelles> <lewis> <flj> <manq> <schar>

Midfielders
<almiron> <fraser> <hayden> <hendrick> <longstaff> <murph> <ritchie> <saintmaximin> <shelvey> + U21 <mongstaff>

Forwards
<carroll> <gayle> <joelinton> <wilson>

Therefore excluding:
Barlaser (loan to Championship)
Yedlin, Atsu, Muto (sell)
Lazaar, Saivet, Aarons (give away/terminate contracts??)

I think the contentious ones are:

Full-back - given Manquillo recently signed a new deal, which one of Yedlin or Krafth do you keep?
Centre-back - do we need 6 (including Dummett)? And if so who goes?
Midfield - Do we keep Murphy, or sell/loan him out? Do we send Barlaser out for another loan?

According to nufc.om, the following are all in the last year of their contract, so I'd expect some of these to be first on the chopping block.

GK - Darlow
DEF - Clark, Schar, Fernandez, Yedlin
MID - Hayden, Atsu
FWD - Carroll, Gayle

I can't see Darlow going anywhere with Dubravka injured and Woodman on another loan. Carroll got his extension so you'd expect him to be used. I think we have to do whatever we can to keep Hayden, but who knows if he still wants to move back down south. Clark and Fernandez are probably the more reliable of the centrebacks there, not sure if they'd get extensions or if we'd just use them into the final year.

Yedlin reportedly wanted to go back to the MLS with wages the stumbling block. Schar was horrific post-restart. Atsu was already on the fringe, can't see any space for him now we've got Fraser in and presumably Joelinton dropping back or playing two up top. Not sure what to make of Gayle's situation - before Wilson he was our only actual striker, but the club have been trying to get rid for years...

Once we've got released kit numbers I'll sort out that mess of kit emotes <neg>

I thought MLS teams would have been queueing up for Yedlin, atsu needs to go along with schar, difficult with sharp though as nobody will take him whilst injured.

Nah with his wages - >£30k I imagine - he’d have to be a designated player (ie a top player who doesn’t have to fit within the wage cap), and each team can only have 3 of them. Very rare to use one of those slots on a right-back!

I think Jamal Lewis would count as an U21 member as he didn't turn 22 until after 1st January

If memory serves me correct the rule is if you are 21 or under before January 1st you count as being u21
I'll Hazard a guess

I'd also say with Gayle out injured for 4 months I doubt he'll be included in the 25 man squad, maybe similar for Schar though he is back training so he might be back for November/December time so may well be included
I'll Hazard a guess

I was thinking the same with Gayle, out until January so no point in registering him

Yep similar to Lejuene last year he was out until late December so he wasn't registered until the 1st January
I'll Hazard a guess

I think that squad picks itself there. Only change I would make is unregister Gayle till January and get a loan striker in. At which point you can take stock of the situation (no doubt someone else will be out till May by then etc) If we bring a CB in we can unregister Schar too but otherwise I think the squad is tidy enough and (with the exception of central striker as gayle is out) well stocked to cover all over.

Longstaff wearing no. 4 like Nobby and Cabaye <awe>

Weird amount of people complaining about Longstaff as no. 4 (a CB number according to namby-pamby EU-remoaners) and Carroll as no. 7 (a winger number according to Brexit-racists). I embrace our unorthodox numbering. Poor Sean Longstaff stuck out on no. 36 though...

That was the Nobby I was referring to! But I suppose Nolan is also a Nobby.

This. Would want to keep Barlaser but too much competition there and a year in the Championship would do him the world of good. He's still only 23? Could still have a future.. Would want to get a new RB to challenge/compete with Manquillo if possible.. sell Kraft/Yeds and get a RB & CB. Ritchie can be used as cover for both full-back positions too. <ok>

Squad numbers out. No big surprises although Matty Longstaff takes number 4. Poor Muto is shoved about at 27 following Wilson’s arrival...got a feeling he’ll be moved on though to be fair:

1 Martin Dubravka
2 Ciaran Clark
3 Paul Dummett
4 Matty Longstaff (was 43)
5 Fabian Schar
6 Jamaal Lascelles
7 Andy Carroll
8 Jonjo Shelvey
9 Joelinton
10 Allan Saint-Maximin
11 Matt Ritchie
12 Dwight Gayle
13 Callum Wilson (new)
14 Isaac Hayden
15 Jamal Lewis (new)
16 Jeff Hendrick (new)
17 Emil Krafth
18 Federico Fernandez
19 Javier Manquillo
20 Florian Lejeune
21 Ryan Fraser (new)
22 DeAndre Yedlin
23 Jacob Murphy (unallocated)
24 Miguel Almiron
26 Karl Darlow
27 Yoshinori Muto (was 13)
28 Henri Saivet (unallocated)
29 Mark Gillespie (new)
30 Christian Atsu
32 Daniel Barlaser (unallocated)
36 Sean Longstaff
41 Dan Langley (was 54)

Ditch one of the three RBs in there (Hayden and Hendrick can cover) and bring in some strike cover. Joelinton isn't a striker, shouldn't be treated like one and Carroll can't be relied on to stay fit.
