Matchday thread - Manchester United v Toon

Post by UlversToon » Sat Oct 15, 2022 6:35 pm

Newcastle visit Old Trafford this Sunday for a 2pm, non-televised, kick-off. All away tickets are sold out.

Newcastle will be clad in their white and green third kit.

NUFC: Various outlets report that Allan Saint-Maximin has suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and won't be involved at Old Trafford. It's anticipated that he'll also miss the Everton and Spurs games.

Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Alexander Isak was "making progress" but wouldn't be available for Sunday's game.

Karl Darlow, Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie remain out.

MUFC: There are injury doubts over Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams. A late call will be made on Anthony Martial.

Scott McTominay will be suspended but the hearing for Cristiano Ronaldo's improper conduct charge remains unscheduled, meaning that he's available for Sunday.

On-loan Martin Dubravka is ineligible to face his parent side (not that he's dirtied his gloves since moving).

The Red Devils have failed to draw any of the 12 League and Cup games played so far this season.

On home ground in the PL, they have beaten Liverpool and Arsenal but lost to Brighton.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 13/5
Any draw 13/5
MUFC win 1/1
NUFC win to nil 13/2
NUFC to score in both halves 16/5
Wilson to score, NUFC win 15/2
ASM to score, NUFC win 16/1
Bruno to score, NUFC win 16/1

Referee: Craig Pawson - a quick return for the South Yorkshire whistler, who was in charge of our 1-1 home draw against Bournemouth last month.

VAR: Jarred Gillett

Looks like ASM is going to be missing but never the less I fancy us to get something from the game - 2-1 Toon (Bruno & Wilson) although I'd be more than happy with a draw.

Really why? Thought he'd be on the bench?

I don't know for definite just going on what NUFC.com were reporting.

Talk of Miggy being injured as well but not sure where people are getting this from.

A few journos have been reporting a setback. I'm hoping it's our newfound misdirection though.

Isak and ASM both had 'setbacks' in their injury recovery, and expected to miss at least the next three games. Thank f*** Wilson is fit.

It just goes to show how much more we need to invest to compete with the likes of MUtd

Our real attacking options today are severely limited with ASM and Isak still out

compared to about 7 or 8 attack/ attacking midfield options for MU

I'll be happy with a draw- and I'll be happy to finish the season in 7th or 8th

Quite surprised by that level of negativity. Obviously I'd prefer both to be available, but I'd take our defense and midfield over theirs, and with Wilson fit I'm less concerned. I still think it'll be difficult, but I'm more confident today than any other time in the last decade.

I wasn't really trying to be negative - just more realistic .

It does feel to me as if some of our fans are starting to think we are genuine top 4 material already- I would contend that we need maybe at least 2 more transfer winows
to allow us to be even close to that

Agree on defence.

Not sure we have ManUs options yet in midfield.

All in all I see fantastic progress - from being rooted to bottom 12 months ago - to now being top 8 with a better squad and a different backroom environment entirely.

We need some patience though

Good to see Shelvey back slightly ahead of schedule.
I'm the scumbag outlaw. You're the pillar of justice. Neither of us like looking at ourselves in the mirror. Do we have a deal?
