Matchday thread - Toon v Villa

Post by UlversToon » Fri Oct 28, 2022 6:29 pm

The Magpies return to action on Saturday in a 3pm start against the Villans. The game is a sell out.

Since the infamous 0-3 loss in April 2005 that saw United end the game with just eight men on the field, Villa have failed to win any of their 14 visits to SJP.

Eddie Howe's side go into this game unbeaten in their last seven PL home fixtures. Since he took over, United have lost just twice in 20 PL games at SJP.

A reminder that the clocks will go back one hour at 2am on Sunday morning as BST gives way to GMT.

NUFC: The sick list currently extends to Alexander Isak, Karl Darlow, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett.

Speaking on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Elliot Anderson was fit again and back in the squad, while a late call on the availability of Allan Saint-Maximin would follow after training.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 5/6
Any draw 13/5
AVFC win 17/5
NUFC win to nil 21/10
NUFC win, under 2.5 goals in game 15/6
Miguel Almiron first scorer 6/1

AVFC: Boubacar Kamara and Diego Silva are out; Ludwig Augustinsson and Lucas Digne are doubtful.

Monday saw Unai Emery confirmed as Villa's new Manager, although he won't officially take charge until November 1st when his work permit takes effect.

Ahead of their visit to SJP, Villa celebrated the departure of previous boss Steven Gerrard by walloping Brentford 4-0 at home on Sunday - a first PL win in five games.

Their away record this season after six games reads lost four, drawn two, won none. Scoring three times, they've let in eleven on their travels so far.

Referee: Paul Tierney - first appointment of the season to a Newcastle game for the Lancastrian whistler.

We witnessed him four times last season - all on home soil - for the PL defeat by Chelsea, draws with Southampton and Watford and win against Burnley.

Tierney was VAR overlord for the recent 5-1 home victory over Brentford, correctly intervening to deny the opening goal scored by the visitors.

VAR: Tony Harrington - switching from refereeing duties in our last home game against Everton.

They'll sit back and try and frustrate us, if we score early then it could be 3 or 4 if we don't our fitness will tell late on so maybe 1-0

I've been perving on their forums since the Emery news broke, a lot of their fans on there seem to expect(/hope) that they'll go a bit gung ho after the result against Brentford, to give the new manager 6 points from 6 as a springboard. There was also plenty of respect for our form and results this season, which is always appreciated. Quite a lot of voices agreeing that the coach plays a part, Howe is making a huge difference, and it's not just about the money and the new ownership. That was also very much appreciated on my part. Obviously dissenting voices too, but always get that.

Anyway, I think it'll be a difficult game, they'll be chomping at the bit for the new manager. Whether Emery will have an input on the tactics etc, or even as a uplifting presence in the stadium, I'm not sure. I'm guessing no to the former, as with having no time to work with the team, you'd assume the interim Danks would have a better handle on the players' personalities and moods coming in to this.

We're in good form and a good position, but shouldn't be getting ahead of ourselves. It won't be a walk over, but we are at home, and there's a lot of confidence in this squad. Let's bring home the win.

The result against Brentford pretty much confirmed Stevie G had lost the dressing room but as the idiom goes one swallow doesn't make a summer.
It'll be tough but like i said above we score early then i think we'll win by a few, it's how we apply ourselves that'll be the decider.

Anderson doesn't make the squad even though he passed fit. Strange.

He’s still ultimately a rookie / young player with potential so will be in and out of the squad as per most young players coming though. Had ASM not been back you’d have expected him to be there but Murphy, Fraser etc bring far more experience.

It should be 3 points today, can see Botman and Schar shutting out Ings and Watkins. Only concern is the midfield, still don't have great confidence in Longstaff in the centre, would have been much more comfortable with Joelinton in there with Bruno.
Can see another goal for Miggy and hopefully get wilson on the scoresheet again, going 3-0 win.

This. Don't agree with scoreline.. I think Villa will derail our momentum. 1-1 draw.. Ings to score and Wilson for us. We'll have chances and ASM will come close but have a worrying feeling about today. <urgh> <erk>

Awful first half like, seen less stop start play in an NFL match. Let's hope the second half is better
