The Carabao Cup Final matchday thread

Post by UlversToon » Fri Feb 24, 2023 5:07 pm

Hopefully the moment most of us have been waiting a lifetime for!

Sunday sees the Magpies and the Red Devils meet at Wembley Stadium in the final of EFL Cup. It's a 4.30pm kick-off.

If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of additional time will be played. If that fails to divide the sides then a penalty shootout will then take place.

This is only the second time that United have reached the League Cup Final since it was established in 1960.

That came in 1976, when Newcastle lost 1-2 to Manchester City at Wembley, Alan Gowling on target with the last goal scored by a Magpie in a cup final.

Team: Bruno Guimaraes is available after completing his suspension while Anthony Gordon is ineligible after playing for Everton in this season's competition.

Following his dismissal at home to Liverpool, Nick Pope will be suspended while Martin Dubravka's loan spell at Manchester United including League Cup action, meaning that he cannot play.

As a consequence, Eddie Howe must give a competitive debut to Loris Karius or turn to Mark Gillespie for the first time since 2020. An injury to Jude Smith means that teenager Max Thompson is set to travel with the squad as third choice custodian.

Joe Willock has returned to training after missing the defeat to Liverpool with a hamstring issue while it's reported that Ryan Fraser is no longer training with the senior squad.

Newcastle will don black and white shirts with black shorts at Wembley.

Coral rate the final as follows:

NUFC win 23/10
Any draw 23/10
MUFC win 6/5
NUFC win 1-0 9/1
NUFC not to score 15/8
Half time score 0-0 13/8
BTTS in both halves, either to win 18/1

While Newcastle had a full week to prepare for the final, it was a different story for Erik ten Hag's side, who knocked Barcelona out of the Europa League on Thursday night.

After drawing 2-2 in the Nou Camp last week, the hosts came from a goal down to win 2-1 in front of their own supporters. That extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games and means that they have now scored in each of their last 26 games - the last team to keep a clean sheet against them? Newcastle United back in October....

Marcus Rashford failed to score on Thursday night, but has netted 16 goals in 18 games since returning from the World Cup last December. There is an alleged injury doubt over Rashford, interpreted by some (including us) as a return to the Fergie mind games era.

While we're taking part in only our second League Cup Final, this will be Manchester United's 10th. They have won five and lost the other four to date.

Assisting ten Hag is former Magpies boss Steve McClaren, in charge of Boro when they won this competition in 2004. He remains the last English-born Manager to lift the League Cup.

Referee: David Coote - revealed to be a Notts County fan, after accusations of pro-Man U bias greeted the announcement of his appointment.

The Nottinghamshire official is yet to take charge of the Magpies this season, but did little to aid our cause in three appearances during 2021/22.

In all of those games (Villa away lost 0-2, Brighton away drew 1-1 and Chelsea away lost 0-1), Coote was loathe to rule on clear instances of foul play, preferring to let VAR decide. He also booked mild-mannered Jacob Murphy each time.

VAR: Peter Bankes - last engaged on the screens for our Boxing Day success at Leicester City in the Premier League.

The romance of the cup !
The fact that Newcastle United are in a cup final is taking it’s toll on me.

Now the cliches , the belief , the hope in the fantasy that becomes reality , the atonement for the Ashley hollowing out era, the garbage managers, cack punditry , the defeat from the jaws of victory , the patronising and sneering of others, the charge that Newcastle United fans are fantasists and far too expectant.

Let’s put all that cliched garbage to bed on Sunday and club, players and fans put on a show !

We are winners , we are back, whether we win or lose because Newcastle United has the hope back , not the manic expectation, but the pride, hope and the belief.

Now, if there any romance left in the footballing world we’re winning this on Sunday

Isn’t it nice not seeing Man C/Liverpool/Chelsea in a final as they’ve seemed to be in literally everything for the last 4-5 years.

It’s the hope that kills …..
Only difference this time is its hope of achievement as opposed to success being defined as avoiding failure and relegation.
Sundays a smiley 😊

When was the last time that anyone battered us under Howe? I genuinely can’t remember. Even Liverpool didn’t batter us last week and we had 10 men most of the game.

It's the most excited I've been for a toon game in over a decade so of course we will get battered because it's Newcastle and we aren't allowed nice things <wave>

(Also it was the 5-1 vs Spurs as far as I can remember <whistle> )

Credit: Stevie O'Neill

Twas the night before London
And all through the land
Not a Geordie could settle
Because of the task soon in hand

The capital prepared
For a sea of Black & White
Not a pub could be seen
Without a Magpie in sight

Then Sunday was here
And Wembley Way beckoned
The Toon marched on down
We couldn't wait one more second

Wembley fell silent
And so did the Tyne
Is this the first Cup
Since Harvey's Heroes in '69

If anyone has a Lidl near them, I recommend going there as it's 'Alps' week. Selling weissbier and 'festival' beer. Also a steiner with a 900ml can to go with it for £4.99. That's me sorted for tomorrow!

Sorted out all the food for tomorrow and mrsOT ordered the beer.

She's got a load of Guinness arriving and seemed perplexed when I didn't see the connection between Newcastle and Guinness. Then it dawned on her that Newcastle has a connection to Newcastle Brown Ale.

Easy mistake
