Matchday thread - Toon v Blackburn Rovers
Thanks to the missus and Martin Lewis I'll be trying to watch this on the train home from Manchester.
United travel to Ewood Park to face Championship side Blackburn Rovers an FA Cup Fifth Round tie at 7.45pm on Tuesday, live on BBC1.
Away fans will occupy both tiers of the Darwen End, with a sold-out following of around 7,200.
There's no provision for replays in the Fifth Round and a result must be achieved on the night, during 30 minutes of extra time and failing that, penalties.
Update: The winners of Tuesday's tie will take their place in the quarter-final draw, shown live on ITV4 from 7pm* ahead of their coverage of Chelsea v Leeds United, which kicks off at 7.30pm.
* this was originally publicised as taking place live on ITV1 before their live coverage of the Liverpool v Southampton tie - presumably some bright spark realised that having the draw take place while ties were actually in progress wasn't a great idea....
Those ties take place over the weekend of Saturday March 16th. Were Newcastle to advance, the PL visit to Crystal Palace that day would be postponed.
(Looking further ahead, Newcastle's PL trip to Old Trafford in April clashes with semi-final weekend).
Team: No new injury problems have been divulged by Newcastle, with no public decision made over the involvement of illness victim Martin Dubravka.
Elliot Anderson, Joelinton, Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Sandro Tonali and Callum Wilson remain unavailable, but there's optimism that Alexander Isak and Joe Willock will feature after returning against Arsenal.
Tonali rates this tie as follows:
NUFC win 8/15
The draw 7/2
BRFC win 9/2
NUFC win, BTTS 31/20
NUFC win to nil 12/5
Tie to end 0-0 22/1
NUFC to win the FA Cup 8/1
BRFC: Kyle McFadzean is eligible after his previous club Coventry City didn't field him in their FA Cup campaign. Now 37, the defender was in the Burton Albion side Newcastle defeated in December 2016.
Blackburn made it to this stage thanks to a 5-2 home win over Cambridge United and a 4-2 success against Wrexham at Ewood.
Last season saw them reach the last eight of the competition before losing at Sheffield United.
Since making it to Round Five, Rovers have replaced ex-Mag Jon Dahl Tomasson as manager with former Birmingham City boss John Eustace.
Away from the FA Cup, Blackburn have won just once in thirteen Championship games. They drew 1-1 at home to Norwich City on Saturday ahead of our visit.
Referee: Jarred Gillett - a third posting of the season involving Newcastle, following the Carabao Cup exit on penalties at Chelsea and FA Cup win at Fulham.
VAR: not in use for this tie (not installed at venue)

Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Blackburn Rovers
We need to go for it. Howe best put out the strongest possible team. Rather go through to the Quarters than win against Wolves (yes I know league's important but who dont love a cup run?) but this is a must win as it gives us something to play for this season. We anit getting top 4 and I'm not too bothered if we end in europe or not. Rather be in a cup final with a chance of winning the Fa Cup than end top 6.
Team for tomorrow (Freshen it up)
Dubra (if fit)
Tripps Lascelles Schar* Tino
Willock Longstaff Bruno
Murphy Isak Gordon
*Botman needs a rest and needs dropping. Young Miley too. Think it's time for Murphy to score a screamer and prove the doubters wrong (ala Tottenham).

Nothing too dramatic but a while back she saw an article on his TV show about cheap rail tickets and managed to get a couple of return tickets to Manchester for about £5 each. I happily went along with it not realising we were about to embark on our glorious FA Cup run!Colly wrote: ↑Tue Feb 27, 2024 7:44 amThis definitely needs more detail.UlversToon wrote: ↑Mon Feb 26, 2024 8:48 pmThanks to the missus and Martin Lewis I'll be trying to watch this on the train home from Manchester.

Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Blackburn Rovers
It's no coincidence that my no ale campaign this year has been so detrimental to our form and results. I'm therefore going to pretend I'm pissed tonight and go for a 3-1 win. When my 2 months is is up on Friday and normal service is resumed I honestly can't see us losing another game this season which obviously means we'll win the FA Cup....
My problem is reconciling my gross behaviour with my net income.

I have made it to Blackburn (or at least a KFC just outside), so it's another silly early arrival for me...

Re: Matchday thread - Toon v Blackburn Rovers
What you having?
I'm quite looking forward to tonight, because of work I've missed the last few games we've played so be good to at least watch us. Won't be an easy game but we should have enough, and would like to see some rotation.
Karius
Trippier - Lascelles - Burn - Livramento
Bruno - Willock - Miley
Murphy - Isak - Barnes
Howe obviously loves big dan burn, but even though the Arsenal game wasn't a great one, hopefully Livra keeps his spot. Burn isn't crap, just not a mobile enough fullback when he doesn't have the cover of Joelinton/Pope's presence behind him. He had a very strong partnership with Lascelles in that first half season. Ideally would rest Isak but not really got much option, and Gordon definitely needs to sit a game out at some point. Murphy and Barnes could compliment each other on either side, I don't think Gordon can do his best outside of that left wing berth, whether as a 9 or on the right.
Nervy 2-0 with them hammering at us late in the game.

Little disappointed with that to be honest, back to the favourites. Hey ho, still looking forward to the game. Bench looking stronger, also.

Hoping that means it's a way to keep his favourites like Burn still getting playing time with the intention to start Tino in the next league match. Of all our issues against Arsenal, I thought he was fine and likely better than Burn could have been expected to do in defending their RW.
