Match Thread: Huddersfield vs Newcastle, 20/08/17

Post by Heisen » Sun Aug 20, 2017 7:43 am

Kick Off: 1.30pm
Where: John Smith's Stadium, Huddersfield

Newcastle return to action this afternoon when they make the journey to West Yorkshire for another Sky-decreed 1.30pm kick-off.

A sold-out John Smith's Stadium crowd of over 23,000 will be present, the Magpies backed by an increased allocation of 2,340 fans - 440 more than last March.

This will be the first ever top-flight fixture at this ground, with the Terriers never playing at that level since 1971/72. They won just four league games from 21 played at their former Leeds Road home.

Team news: Shelvey starts his suspension. Yedlin is still out along with Lejeune and Dummett, although Mbemba is expected to be fit despite missing training this week. Merino expected to make his debut.

HTFC: Their injury list includes Jonathan Hogg, Martin Cranie, Nahki Wells and Jon Gorenc Stankovic.

The Terriers debuted in their Premier League with a 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday, thanks to an own goal and a brace from newly-signed striker Steve Mounie.

Ref: Craig Pawson (Sheffield).

TV: Live on Sky Sports Football

Expected Line Up:
<elliot>
<manq> <mbemba> <lascelles> <clark> <hayden> <merino>
<ritchie> <ayoze> <atsu>
<gayle>

Another week, another underwhelming one on the transfer front. We are without three first team defenders with injury and our 'talisman' due to a ridiculous suspension. Huddersfield will come in to this with their tales up after rollicking Palace 3-0 and with it being their first PL game on home soil, I can't see anything other than a Terriers win.

Prediction: Huddersfield 2-1 Newcastle

2-0 Toon - Ritchie & Gayle.

I can remember the 1971/72 season well - I think Trevor Cherry played for Huddersfield before signing for the, then, mighty Leeds United!

We'll need that to stop Mounié.

Not confident about this one at all, 2-0 Huddersfield.

We'll struggle to score and Hud will have the bit between their teeth so we'll be on the ropes for most of the game.

I hope I'm wrong <erk>

That Leeds team were simply sublime . I think everyone could name the team even though they didn't support them .

Harvey, Reaney, Cooper, Bremner, Charlton (J), Hunter, Lorimer, Clarke, Jones, Giles & Gray (E).

I think Cherry was bought to replace Reaney.

4 points from this and West ham has to be the target.

Personally I don't want Perez starting as he offers very little. If we are going to play on the counter we need attackers who can keep the ball.

Their first home game in the PL so they'll be up for it and really have a go but I think that could play into Rafa's hands.

We started with Murphy last time so maybe we'll see Joselu or Mitro starting today?

I'd have struggled with Reaney but the rest were ingrained in the memory . Funny thing was Norman Hunter ( a very hard blunt tackler ) at a talk in I went to said Bremner was the dirtiest plater he'd ever played with ! <worried>

Rafa 'exclusive' in the build up, bored of this war of words now.

Anyone see Shaun Custis talk us on Sunday supp? Nailed it really, Ashley comes across good in interviews apologising every two years but really we haven't moved forward at all in his 10 years.

Remember Bremner getting into a lot of trouble in his day and those encounters with Kevin Keegan and Dave Mackay stand out!

Agree with OP. 2-1 Huddersfield. Gonna be a tough game today.
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.
