Match day thread - NUFC v BHA
Brighton (h)
Newcastle's final game of 2017 sees them hosting Brighton and Hove Albion this Saturday (30th).
Limited tickets are still on sale for what is Albion's maiden top-flight visit to Gallowgate. It's an old-fashioned 3pm kick-off.
The Seagulls will be backed by 2,200 fans, who will receive a voucher for free food & drink from their own club as a reward for climbing all those stairs.
NUFC: Isaac Hayden may return to the squad but injury will see Aleksandar Mitrovic, Jesus Gamez and Florian Lejuene are all absent.
BHAFC: To follow.
Tim Krul has provided bench cover to first-choice goalkeeper Matthew Ryan since exiting SJP for Brighton, with his only senior appearance to date a League Cup defeat at Bournemouth.
Fellow old boy Kazenga LuaLua is on loan at QPR.
Chris Hughton makes his fourth managerial return to SJP since leaving in 2010 and is yet to win a point, following a 0-1 defeat for Norwich City in 2012/13, a 1-2 reverse for the Canaries in 2013/14 and a 0-2 loss for his Seagulls last season in the Championship.
Albion were beaten 0-2 at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day, their fourth successive away defeat following losses by the same margin to Spurs and Huddersfield, before which they went down 0-1 at Old Trafford.
Previous to that came victories at Swansea (1-0) and West Ham (3-0) that mirror our away successes.
Brighton's opening four PL games on the road yielded just one point and one goal; defeats at Leicester (0-2), Bournemouth (1-2) and Arsenal (0-2) and a scoreless draw at Watford.
Referee: Anthony Taylor - trekking from Cheshire for a first game of the season involving us, we last had his company for the 5-1 home victory over Spurs in May 2016.
Parking: Northumbria University offer weekend car parking to the public for £4 all day (or £1 per hour). 500 spaces are available at Lipman and City Campus East: book online here or turn up to pay & display.
Travel: Normal service with no scheduled closures.
Roads around SJP will be traffic free for 20 minutes either side of the final whistle, with barriers closed at these junctions:
Strawberry Place/Leazes Park Road
Strawberry Place/Barrack Road
Strawberry Place/St James Street
Strawberry Lane
Leazes Terrace will also be traffic-free for the same period, additionally closing from 2pm.

Nice gesture from Brighton.
Feeling confident about this one. We've said this a few times but this really is a must win. Merino back is a big boost. If he's not knackered I'd start Dummett at LB (as this is more winnable than Stoke on Monday).

Elliot out injured tomorrow. People can think what they like about him but without question he's better than Darlow.

I prefer Darlow.
Re: Match day thread - NUFC v BHA
I'd like to see Woodman play but it's unlikely. He'll probably play in the FA Cup against Luton now though, hopefully does well.

In what aspects do you think he outperforms Elliot out of interest?Luque wrote:I prefer Darlow.

Can be a good shot stopper but makes far too many mistakes. Must admit when I saw his name I felt less confident...Bodacious Benny wrote:In what aspects do you think he outperforms Elliot out of interest?Luque wrote:I prefer Darlow.

I think he's a better shot stopper than Elliot. Better distribution and not as chubby..

Thoughts on the midfield? Saivet or Hayden (if fit). Merino and Shelvey together?
Also, I havent been watching matches (text) is Perez still knocking about or has Gayle completely taken his role?

One thing about Rafa is that he at least makes the process of guessing the starting line up interesting.
I wouldn't be surprised if he goes with Joselu and Gayle for this one and go 442, with some pace out wide.

There is no sin except stupidity.
Re: Match day thread - NUFC v BHA
I reckon Gayle, Atsu and Ritchie will definitely come in. Maybe Perez and Merino as well.
I'll be surprised if we dont revert to a back for and Clark isn't back in alongside Lascelles.

Darlow
Yedlin Lascelles Clark Dummett
Ritchie Merino Shelvey Saivet Atsu
Gayle
Must win today. Disappointing Elliot being out. Would stick with Gayle, now Shelvey's back would definatly start him - he makes Gayle twice the player. Yedlin Lascelles Clark Dummett
Ritchie Merino Shelvey Saivet Atsu
Gayle
Don't want to see Manquillo, Diame, Atsu or Murphy anywhere near starting XI. All garbage, and we now have strong options available.
Expect to see
Darlow
Yedlin Lascelles Clark Manquillo
Murphy Diame Merino Ritchie
Gayle Joselu
Yedlin Lascelles Clark Manquillo
Murphy Diame Merino Ritchie
Gayle Joselu

Yeah I'm happy with that, shelvey can be subbed on. Obviously not a great fan of joselu but we don;t really have any other options at the minute for a striker.Bodacious Benny wrote:[tweet][/tweet]

Slight side note, Stoke have named a dog s*** side v Chelsea so probably saving players for Monday when we play them. Can't blame them really.
