How about Carroll? Without the off-field antics and injuries he could have been some player, and even with them he's still an effective battering ram when he can make it onto the pitch.

Harper
Mbabu Bramble Taylor Ferguson
Thauvin Viana Vuckic Sammy Ameobi
Ranger Bridges

Ranger Bridges
Really hard to pick a GK, went for Harper as through no fault of his own was always behind a really good keeper so a majority of his career was wasted as a back up.
The rest are players who I personally thought were going to be amazing for us for at least a few years but obviously never happened for them.
Also I know Bridges was a loan but would have probably signed if he had kicked on after his injuries.

Ranger definitely showed [rare] glimpses. In the 4-4 with Arsenal he was a real handful when he came on.Don Sholeone wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 4:50 pmHarper

Personally never expected Sammy to do anything

Much as I don't think Sammy was ever going to be anything special, he still would have done far more of a job for us over the last three seasons than Atsu has. At least he had that little bit of unpredictability to occasionally beat a man or nick a goal, that one straight from kickoff against Spurs was superb.

Bring back Ameobi

I hated that routine, pass it back and hoof onto the wing. We did that for ages.

It's good we got that one sly goal and then moved on, it was never to happen again. I probably told this story ages ago, but I still remember a young Sammy just as he'd broken into the side asking to join our weekly kick around one day (the field beside Abbotsford Terrace), only to have the guy who organized it tell him we already had enough players that week. When a Newcastle United player asks if he can play, you let the guy play!Colly wrote: ↑Sun Apr 12, 2020 3:04 pmMuch as I don't think Sammy was ever going to be anything special, he still would have done far more of a job for us over the last three seasons than Atsu has. Re: Nufc unfulfilled potential xi
GK: Fraser Forster- Similar to Harper he had a better keeper ahead of him and had to go elsewhere to reach his potential (Unfortunately I can see the same happening to Woodman)
RB: Kevin Mbabu- like many said already has turned into a very good player, done well on his debut out of position but attitude got in his way
cb: Gary Caldwell- don't think he actually broke through to the first team for us, maybe on the bench perhaps, went on to have a decent enough career with Celtic and Wigan
cb: Titus Bramble- Bramble was one of those defenders who would be brilliant for 89 minutes and 50 seconds of a game but those 10 seconds would cost us many times. Think he would have been a better player had Sir Bobby stayed to nurture his talent.
lb : Robbie Elliot- I remember this lad was very exciting under Keegan and always thought he'd go onto great things, then Dalglish came in and sold him, another player who I feel with the right management would have been a star.
LW-Charles N'Zogbia- really liked this lad when he first came through the first real casualty of the Ashley era imo got too big for his boots.
CM - Jermaine Jenas- another youngster I think who would have blossomed if Sir Bobby had remained, very good on the ball and went on to have a decent spell at Spurs.
CM:Keiron Dyer- again very similar to Jenas, was very excited when we signing him but a mixture of injuries and falling outs with managers curtailed him
RW- Remy Cabella- Ok i know he was more a left handed side player but I had to get him in the team- Another player who I was very excited about, I remember seeing him play for France U21 team and thinking he was a class apart, was instrumental in Montpellier winning Ligue 1 alongside Giroud that time. Just didn't bring any form to the North-East.
CF- Luuk de Jong- Think if he had actually played as a stiker we would have seen the best of him
CF- Patrick Kluivert- Another player who falls into the if only Sir Bobby had stayed, I don't think he was the same player he had been in the past but think he done well for us at times and had he stayed beyond one season could have got a few more goals to push us into Europe.
Notable mentions
Albert Luque- Another who got me excited at least just didn't settle
James Milner- for what he has gone onto achieve I think he probably even merits a place in the starting XI. Bad management at Newcastle led to him becoming disgruntled don't blame him for leaving as we were a shitshow and relegation was coming

Some really good shouts there. Luque was just unlucky with that horrible hamstring injury, basically wrecked his career.

Definitely I'd say similar to Michael Owen he was half the player once he lost the pace.
Though I think luque was a more natural finisher

Think there's a lot of good shouts in there. Bit harsh on Dyer, he played 250 games for us.

Perhaps a little but imo without really becoming what I at least thought he would have, injuries definitely hampered him. I remember when we signed him similar to Jenas he was tipped to be the next big English midfielder, despite the number of games he never fulfilled that.

I think Jenas was about 28 when people were still talking about his potential...

Used to constantly get linked to Man U for £25m after we signed him. That was when Man U were good, and when £25m was a lot of money in football...lassassinblanc wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 10:21 pmPerhaps a little but imo without really becoming what I at least thought he would have, injuries definitely hampered him. I read his autobiography last year and it was really interesting to see the man behind the headlines.
