Thanks to this video, I discovered some of the worst music I've ever heard in my life. And that is arguably this guy's best piece of music as far as I've seen thus far.

Not really heard any of his music, but he's funny and self effacing on panel shows. Unusual for a rapper

3 months of Spotify Premium for 99p <divadance>

Disgraceful that it was only offered to new users whilst existing customers were still expected to pay £30 though. Cancelled my premium on one account and set up a new one to get the offer. Spotify really need to give their existing customers discounts and offers. <disgrace>

Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke have been ordered to pay the estate of Marvin Gaye US $7.3m (€6.8m) for copyright infringement.

A California federal jury of five women and three men today (March 10) ruled that 2013 megahit Blurred Lines had infringed on Marvin Gaye’s 1977 track Got To Give It Up.

In a week-long trial, both writers strongly denied having interloped aspects of Gaye’s song.

It was revealed during legal proceedings that Blurred Lines had generated $16.5m in sales, but cost Universal Music Group an estimated $6.9m in overhead.

Thicke and Williams were said to have earnt more than $5m apiece from the song, which topped the charts in 14 countries but attracted widespread condemnation for its lyrics.

During his defence in the trial, Thicke claimed that he was high on Vicodin and alcohol during the creation of Blurred Lines.

The Gaye family sought more than $25m in compensation.

Absolute bollocks if you ask me. Not a Robin Thicke fan or anything but feel sorry for the guy.

I can see the similarity. But surely any song as simple and paired back as these two are going to sound similar if they have similar drum rhythms.

On a different note: God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. One of my favourite songs ever. <awe> There is no part of it that isn't awesome.

It's so stupid imo, does this mean The Hunger Games owes Battle Royale $5 billion now?

So people should be free to rip-off an instrumental and make a massively successful song without paying the original creator the appropriate cut?

Even sampling a second or three of someone else's work requires appropriate clearance and, if demanded, fees paid, as is common in hip-hop thanks to the sampling culture.

In this case it's not just the drum signatures, the defense argued the following substantial similarities: "(1) the signature phrase in the main vocal melodies; (2) the hooks; (3) the hooks with backup vocals; (4) the core theme in 'Blurred Lines' and backup hook in 'Got to Give it Up'; (5) the backup hooks; (6) the bass melodies; (7) the keyboard parts; and (8) the unusual percussion choices."
