I'd agree that the level of celebration was over the top if it was a league match.

When you play for your country and score then you should celebrate.

If they hadn't of celebrated they'd likely be lambasted by Trump and then you'd have all his **** nugget supporters sending threats anyway.
His supporters probably think football is unAmerican. <roll>
Well, it is internationally known as soccer.

Why is Hope Solo unlikable? She seems alright in her punditry work for the BBC.
I believe she could be a great pundit, but when playing you could always count on her for dumb comments, on-pitch antics, or being a sore loser, like when calling Sweden cowards when beaten by them at the past Olympics (a few examples here https://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/08/hope-s ... statements), or more serious drama like being charged with domestic violence for drunkenly assaulting her sister and nephew.

Now I'm not saying she's a bad person, or that some of the stuff isn't overblown, in fact, I really appreciate her quotes criticising how the American soccer system favours "rich, white kids" and overall her candidness from an athlete is actually fun and considered. I really just meant that she's the kind of player on a rival team that was easy to cheer against.
Fair enough.

I've never really followed womens fotball so had really took much notice of her up until watching this world cup. She certainly sounds like a bit of a character.

Especially if it's for Scotland.... you never know when it will happen again :)
It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city.

Totally understandable. I think I only have as much awareness because of our exposure to American media in Canada, and our women's national team is ranked #4 in the world, while our men's team hasn't qualified for the World Cup in over 30 years - so it's worth keeping up with them.

Definitely. They represent the most famous female (team) athletes in the US, going back to the days of Mia Hamm, with a great collegiate system and a lot of investment. Have had some really unlikable stars (if you're not American, or maybe even if you are) over the past few years though - looking at you Hope Solo.

There has always been something about her I don't like, she does come across a bit cocky and arrogant sometimes, but I just don't know if that's down to her "American-ness"

In terms of matches, I've literally seen 10 mins (can't even recall who was playing). There were actually some players with decent technical ability it looked like, but the lack of pace and power is what stood out (not just in running speed, but also having players who could fizz a hard, direct pass or powerful shot). It's good that it's getting well covered, Alex Scott is an excellent pundit.

These retaken penalties are becoming ridiculous. Rules or not, enforcement of them this way can't be good for the game.

I only saw 1 replay of the penalty and I'm sure the goalie still had 1 foot on the line and I'm sure the new rules state it only has to be 1 foot.

It did look like a very harsh call, I thought when the ball was struck she had a foot on the line which I'd have thought was perfectly acceptable.

I just don't get it, I thought VAR was to be used in deciding if it's a penalty or not, checking all goals and red cards, and mistaken identity. When did they expand that to things like this? It's going to absolutely kill penalties for goalkeepers.

I don't object to it being used for this as some GKs really take the piss, but for such a minor infringement it seems OTT.
