Agreed. When everything that once worked with a group of players stops working, after that long in charge, I can understand him looking for a break, and them looking for a fresh start.

Edit: Agreed about the second point, like BB said, it seems like one of the legitimate mutual parting of ways, and not just a PR line to save face for the manager.
