Matchday thread - Toon v Citeh

Post by UlversToon » Fri Mar 15, 2024 8:24 pm

Only the current holders, European Champions and World Champions stand in the way of the Mighty Toon and their quest for domestic glory!

Newcastle visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday to face the current FA Cup holders in a quarter-final tie, with a visit to Wembley in the semi-final awaiting the winners.

It's a 5.30pm kick-off and the visitors will backed by 7,800 fans in the South Stand on Level 2 (middle) and 3 (top). Home followers will occupy Level 1 (lower).

As a consequence of our progress, the Premier League trip to Crystal Palace that day has been postponed.

(Looking further ahead, Newcastle's PL trip to Old Trafford in April clashes with semi-final weekend).

There's no provision for replays - an outcome must be reached in 90 minutes, via 30 minutes extra time or penalties.

Quarter-finals:

Sat 16.03.2024:
Wolves v Coventry City (12.15pm) ITV1
Manchester City v Newcastle United (5.30pm) BBC1

Sun 17.03.2024:
Chelsea v Leicester City (12.45pm) BBC1
Manchester United v Liverpool (3.30pm) ITV1

Team: In addition to Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali, United will be without Harvey Barnes and Kieran Trippier.

Anthony Gordon is expected to feature after recovering from the knock that forced him off at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe confirmed that Sean Longstaff was playing on with a foot injury, having an injection in recent days.

Following Saturday's tie, those players not going away on international duty will fly out to Dubai for a warm weather training camp.

Tonsli rates this tie as follows:

NUFC win in 90 minutes 17/2
The draw after 90 minutes 5/1
0-0 draw after 90 minutes 16/1
MCFC win in 90 minutes 1/4
MCFC win in Extra Time 9/1
NUFC win in Extra Time 28/1
MCFC win on penalties 18/1
MCFC win on penalties 18/1
Red card for either side 16/5

MCFC: Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne both miss out due to injury. Ederson will be replaced by Stefan Ortega, who was in goal for City's 0-1 League Cup loss at Gallowgate back in September.

Jack Grealish is expected to be in the squad.

Referee: Simon Hooper - second Toon posting of the season for the Wiltshire whistler, following the 4-1 PL home triumph over Chelsea.

VAR: Thomas Bramall

The two sides have already met twice in the Premier League this season; United beaten 0-1 at the Etihad Stadium last August and 2-3 on Tyneside in January.

Eddie Howe's side got the better of Pep Guardiola's lot in the Carabao Cup at SJP in September, winning 1-0.

Newcastle are unbeaten in cup competitions at the Etihad - their sole visit a 2-0 League Cup success back in October 2014. Less thrillingly, we've lost seventeen of our nineteen PL visits, drawing the other two. Since DeAndre Yedlin netted in 2018 we've endured 510 scoreless minutes at that venue.

City's FA Cup home form doesn't bode well for us; they have won all 12 ties there since losing 0-2 to Boro in 2015. Those dozen victories have seen a total of 52 home goals scored and conceding five.

This is Newcastle's fifth successive away draw in this competition since losing to Cambridge United at Gallowgate back in January 2022.

Our most recent quarter-final tie came against City in June 2020, the visitors winning 2-0 at Gallowgate behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

This will be Newcastle's 29th appearance in the last eight of the FA Cup. To date they have progressed 17 times and exited on the other 11 occasions.

The last Magpie to score in a quarter-final tie was Patrick Kluivert against Spurs at SJP in March 2005 - that 1-0 success our most recent one at this stage.

This will be the second time that we've faced the Citizens in both domestic cup competitions and the league during the same season after 1994/95:

Nov 1994 drew 1-1 (a) LC
Dec 1994 lost 0-2 (h) LC replay
Jan 1995 drew 0-0 (h) PL
Feb 1995 won 3-1 (h) FA
Apr 1995 drew 0-0 (a) PL

At the ultimate of ultimate bests we somehow take it to penalties and then lose. So just put us out of misery City and beat us in normal time.

Which they will.

By cod that's a dour return from the last 20 years.

Makes sense now though that I remember exactly where I was for the League Cup match in 2014/15 when Aaron's scored. Still a cracker of a goal.

Heart says 2-1 Toon but head says we'll take a 4 or 5 goal thumping.

Burn at wing back, no sign of Tino. It's very defensive, would have liked to have seen Targett start if we were setting up like that.

Apparently Targett isn't fully fit. And Hall is persona non grata.

I'd probably prefer us to play Almiron there.
Although did Burn play there for Brighton? think he might have

Burn can do it, it's just in a back 5 I'd prefer a little more balance. Suspect it'll end up a flat back 4 at times with Murphy advanced, so not quite a Rafa/Bruce lineup.

If Burn isn't getting torched for pace, he's back peddling scared away from the ball to avoid them beating him 1:1. He's basically become an Iron Mike fullback.

I think this is really harsh, second game on the bounce he's getting no cover. For the goal Silva wasn't his man, he was getting overlapped and still managed to nearly get a block in.
